On Wednesday, October 14, from 7 to 8 p.m., the Louie Cruz Beltran Trio will play Latin jazz inside the Jeronimo Tunnel, the muraled underpass where the Oso Creek Trail passes beneath Jeronimo Road near Arbolitos. The show is free and open to all ages. There's seating, and you don't need to register. It's the latest show in a City series called "Subterranean Soundscapes," and the venue itself has an origin story most trail users never hear. The tunnel was painted with performances in mind. The concerts were part of the plan before the mural was finished.
A Mural Painted With Sound in Mind
In January 2023, the City of Mission Viejo invited volunteers aged 10 and older to help finish a new mural in the tunnel at a community painting day on Saturday, January 28. The same notice said the City planned free concerts once the mural was done. Those concerts would use the tunnel's acoustics and build on the mural's theme, "Tunnel Vibration."
The Orange County Register covered the painting day that month. Its photos show residents and City staff with brushes, including Sarah Stimson, the City's Cultural Services Manager. The design is built on a trick of color. The City's public art page describes it this way:
"Using the art and science of color, the mural creates a whimsical optical illusion in which high-contrast colors appear to visibly vibrate when placed next to each other."
The same page says the space would host events with lighting effects on the colors, giving visitors "an audio and visual experience like no other site in the City." The paint, the lighting and the acoustics were planned as a set. A rider coasting through on a Tuesday morning sees the paint. A Wednesday evening audience gets all three.
Three Years of Shows, Nearly All on Wednesday Nights
The series started in 2024, and the opening event didn't follow the expected format. On Friday, January 26, 2024, the City held a silent disco in the tunnel from 6 to 9 p.m. It was meant to bring the newly painted space to life with music, lighting and an audio-visual experience. Since then, every show in the City's listings has run from 7 to 8 p.m. on a Wednesday, and the lineup has changed genre almost every time.
| Date | Performer | What It Sounded Like |
|---|---|---|
| Fri., Jan. 26, 2024 | Silent disco | Music and lighting in the newly painted tunnel |
| Wed., Oct. 16, 2024 | WestBeat singers, Halloween SCAREolers™ | Spooky a cappella |
| Wed., Apr. 16, 2025 | Pacific Symphony string players | Classical selections by candlelight |
| Wed., Oct. 8, 2025 | Tom Bagley | Piano oldies, classic rock and pop |
| Wed., Oct. 14, 2026 | Louie Cruz Beltran Trio | Afro-Cuban rhythms, Latin jazz, pop and R&B |
Each of the last three years has included a mid-October Wednesday show, which looks like a fall habit forming. As of early October 2026, though, the City's special events calendar listed only the October 14 show for the series. If you've missed earlier shows, this is the one date you can count on right now.
What October 14 Brings
The City calls Louie Cruz Beltran "an entertainer at heart." He's a bandleader who also plays congas and timbales and sings. His music mixes Afro-Cuban rhythms with jazz, Latin jazz, pop and R&B. Hand percussion is a natural fit for a space the City calls "acoustically rich." It's a very different sound from last fall's solo piano or the a cappella set two Octobers ago.
The City announced the show on September 30, 2026. Questions go to the City at 949-470-8470, and arts programming inquiries go to [email protected].
Walking In Is Part of the Show
For this concert, the City is reserving street parking on Jeronimo near Arbolitos. It also suggests something else: park at one of the nearby access points and walk the Oso Creek Trail to the tunnel, which avoids traffic and lets you enjoy the setting on the way in. Parking has changed since the series began. The 2024 silent disco had no on-site parking and only a few disability spaces on Via San Fernando. For this show, follow the October 2026 directions.
The City names three trailheads on its Oso Creek Trail page. The trail system covers 5.5 miles in total.
- Character Garden Trailhead, 25552 Marguerite Parkway
- Potocki/World Cup Soccer Trailhead, 27301 La Paz Road
- Pavion Park Trailhead, 24051 Pavion
The City doesn't give a distance from any trailhead to the tunnel. One local trail guide, Fun Orange County Parks, puts the stretch from the World Cup Soccer parking area to Oso Creek Golf Course at a little over a mile each way, with the tunnel along that route. It doesn't say exactly where the tunnel falls, so plan the walk for a mile or so and leave extra time before 7 p.m.
The Trail Keeps Gaining Public Art
The tunnel isn't the only artwork on the Oso Creek Trail. On July 4, 2026, the City and the Mission Viejo Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution dedicated an America 250 mosaic obelisk and Patriot Marker at the trail's hedge maze. On July 22, the City called it Mission Viejo's newest public artwork. It stands in the center of the hedge maze.
The DAR chapter credits Maryann Rudolph Herrera with designing the obelisk's four panels and Joseph & Sons Mosaic Artists with making the mosaic. The City prepared the site and built the structure. According to the City, both the mosaic and the obelisk shape echo Mission Viejo's public art traditions, and the form also nods to the Washington Monument. A short MVTV News feature on the piece is on the City's YouTube channel.
The tunnel mural and the obelisk have more in common than location. Both were made by the City with community partners. Both reflect a deliberate idea of what a walking trail can be. The 2023 mural turned an underpass into a stage, and the 2026 obelisk put a monument in a garden maze. Three years apart, the City put both pieces on the trail rather than at City Hall or a shopping center. That's why the City's advice to walk in, instead of driving up to the curb, makes sense on October 14.
The Rest of That Week
The concert falls in one of the busiest stretches on the City's fall calendar. If you'd like to plan more than one outing:
- Wednesday, Oct. 14, 7 to 8 p.m. Louie Cruz Beltran Trio in the Jeronimo Tunnel, near Jeronimo and Arbolitos.
- Saturday, Oct. 17, 5 to 9 p.m. Night Market, Día de Los Muertos edition, at North Paseo at LOS OSOS, 25282 Marguerite Parkway. The City holds a night market there on the third Saturday of each month.
- Saturday, Oct. 24, from 2 p.m. The 5th Annual Día de los Muertos Festival at Norman P. Murray Center, 24932 Veterans Way. The organizers' listing includes mariachi, folklórico dancing, artisans, food and a processional parade.
The Saturday farmers market and craft fair also runs every week from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at North Paseo at LOS OSOS. Of these events, only the tunnel concert needs a walk along the creek.
